India a win away from medal, face ARG

Tokyo Olympics LIVE- Hockey: India vs Argentina- Women’s tournament- semi-final; Live Stream, Scores, Date, Time, All you need to know- India women’s hockey team is one win away from clinching a first Olympic medal as Gurjit Kaur’s strike catapulted them in the semi-finals of the Summer Games.

Rani Rampal and Co. made a great escape to qualify for the knockouts before putting in a performance for the ages to beat World No.2 side Australia in the quarter-finals. The campaign is already India’s best at the Summer Games, and should they pull off a result against Argentina, they will finish in the top two spots on the podium.

Gurjit Kaur scored the only goal of the game as a resolute India women’s hockey team saw the back of Australia in their maiden quarter-final game on Monday. The Indian eves had struggled to convert penalty corners throughout the tournament but did when it mattered the most, scoring in the 22nd minute of the game. The Australians retaliated with ferocity, but Rani Rampal and Co. kept the World No.2 side at bay to clinch a mammoth upset victory. 

India women’s hockey team managed to save a whopping 8 penalty corners while converted the only one that they got in the match to register one of the most famous wins in Olympic history. It marks India’s third consecutive win on the trot, after successes over Ireland and South Africa in their final group stage games.

 

Following the victory, Gurjit Kaur said, “Very happy with the win, everybody worked very hard for this win. We performed like one team and we are feeling so happy to have qualified for the semifinals. Thank you to all those who supported the Indian women’s team. This team is like a family, including the coaching staff. Our entire country supports us and everybody’s prayers are with us. “

Argentina meanwhile clinched a comfortable 2-0 win over Germany in their quarter-final clash. Argentina are ranked 5th in the world and are on the back of a five-game unbeaten run having lost their opener against New Zealand. They will prove to be a stern test for the Indian eves, who have shown they are up for the challenge.
