The New York Jets are acquiring Houston Texans edge rusher Shaq Lawson in exchange for a 2022 sixth-round pick, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Texans initially acquired Lawson in a trade with the Miami Dolphins in March.
Lawson, a former first-round pick, spent the first five seasons of his career in the AFC East (four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, one with Miami).
In 14 games for the Dolphins last season, he recorded four sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 32 tackles, four tackles for a loss and 18 quarterback hits. The 27-year-old boosts a Jets defense that was counting on Carl Lawson to be a game-changer in the pass rush. Carl suffered a season-ending Achilles injury just one week ago, leaving the door open for the Jets to sign another pass rusher.
Lawson is set to earn a $1.4 million base salary for the 2021 season, and the Jets could move on from him after this year to avoid paying him his $8.9 million base salary for 2022.
