He’s getting his money.
Cale Makar has signed a six-year deal worth $9 million annually, keeping him in Denver until he’s 28 years old.
The deal will make him buy the Avalanche one year of his UFA status before needing to extend him.
The Avalanche know what they have in Makar, a finalist for the Norris Trophy this past season.
Makar averaged a point-per-game in 44 contests, the only defenseman to do so this season. Adam Fox eventually took home the Norris, but Makar has clearly become one of the top young defenders in the game today. The Avalanche currently have around $20.25 million in cap space with a handful of players still left to sign. We’ll have to wait and see what happens to players such as Gabriel Landeskog, Brandon Saad and Philipp Grubauer as Colorado looks to stay competitive in the team’s current Cup contention window.
