Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his say on Manchester United’s penalty taker following Ronaldo’s arrival

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his say on Manchester United’s penalty taker following Ronaldo’s arrival

Ronaldo returns

In a deal confirmed just days ahead of the end of the transfer window, it was announced that Cristiano Ronaldo would be returning for a second spell at Manchester United, 12 years after his last stint at Old Trafford.

CR7 netted 118 times in 292 appearances for the Red Devils during his last spell in England, and will be looking to significantly add to that over the two years that he is contracted to the club for.

In the meantime, his signing has proved a huge success for the Manchester United brand, with “Ronaldo 7” shirt sales reaching 188 million pounds, which paid for the transfer fee alone.

Can Ronaldo, so often the hero for his club, bring success to Manchester after four long years without a trophy?

Sticking point over penalties

One potential sticking point at Manchester United, however, could come in the form of penalty taker. Bruno Fernandes is The Red Devils current spot-kick master, and netted 13 penalties last campaign. However, at national level and for Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo is the main man.

Indeed, when Portugal were awarded a penalty against Northern Ireland in a World Cup qualifier last week, Fernandes handed the ball to Ronaldo without question, only for the 36 year old to see his kick saved.

However, it appears as though the man to choose the spot kick taker will not be Fernandes or CR7, but rather boss Solskjaer, who revealed:

“I’ve had a chat with the two of them and they know my position on it. They know that I decide who is going to shoot the penalty if we get one. That’s not going to cause an issue. We’re here to win together.”

Will whoever is snubbed bear a grudge, or will it simply fire them on to find the back of the net from open play more often?
