Jake Stringer’s recent form ‘the closest ten-week period to what Dustin Martin is’, says Matthew Lloyd

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has lavished praise on Bombers star Jake Stringer, saying his recent block of form is the closest thing he’s seen to Dustin Martin.

Stringer has been a revelation in 2021, kicking 37 goals from his 17 games so far this season, and starred once again on the weekend with a season-high five-goal haul in a win over the Gold Coast Suns which put Essendon into the top eight.

Lloyd, who has been hesitant to praise Essendon too early in the past, paid Stringer the ultimate compliment with his comparison to the three-time Norm Smith Medallist, Martin.

“There’s not many [players like this], Dustin Martin is rare,” he told Nine’s Footy Classified.

“I think Stringer is playing the closest ten-week period to what Dustin Martin is. Cripps will never be that, Petracca doesn’t even kick a lot of goals, Jordan De Goey has had an occasional game like this.

“This is the closest ten-week period to anything I reckon I’ve seen Dustin Martin do, that’s how well he’s going.”

Stringer’s recent run of form also prompted a backtracking from Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes, who admitted he’d “got him wrong”.

“He’s blown me away with what he’s been able to do,” Cornes said.

“Do I trust him now? Yeah, I do. Why? Because I think he’s a lot smarter, he is playing the game really smart. He’s got a really good ability to take calculated risks. When he senses [Essendon’s midfield] is going to win the footy [at the centre bounces], he is gone.

“If you don’t have one of these players in your team now, they’re the most valuable commodity. It’s not the key forward anymore, it’s a big-bodied midfielder who can go forward, get a mismatch like he did five times on that weekend, and score.

“To anyone that doesn’t have one, can Carlton turn Cripps into this? I don’t know. Can St Kilda do it with Steele? Can Port Adelaide do it with Wines? I’m not sure, but if you don’t have one you’re at a massive disadvantage.”
