Steelers vs. Bills Week 1 recap

Buffalo Bills fans certainly had high expectations coming into the 2021 NFL season. The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t care.

The Bills offense had one gameplan revolved around one player: Josh Allen. From the first to the last whistle, Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was going to utilize Allen in every facet of the game. When all was said and done, Allen threw 51 passes for 270 yards and was second on the team with 9 carries for 44 yards. Devin Singletary, once given a consistent opportunity, finished the game with 72 yards on 11 carries.

Pittsburgh came prepared to focus on shutting Allen down and they did just that. Pressure up front, led by T.J. Watt, created an uneasy pocket through all four quarters for Allen and Buffalo was never able to adjust. A number of holding penalties throughout didn’t help the Bills offense either.

The turning point in today’s Steelers vs. Bills game came in the 4th quarter when the Steelers special teams unit blocked a Matt Haack punt. That, along with Ben Roethlisberger finding a rhythm on offense with WR Chase Claypool, led to 20 unanswered points in the 2nd half. Roethlisberger ended the game 18/32 with 188 yards while Claypool and Juju Smith-Schuster combined for seven catches and 97 yards. WR Diontae Johnson caught Roethlisberger’s lone touchdown.

If you were hoping for a big day from rookie RB Najee Harris, you didn’t get it in Week 1. Harris carried the ball 16 times for just 45 yards. Rookie TE Pat Freiermuth caught one pass for 24 yards.
