Canada opened the women’s basketball tournament at the Tokyo Olympics with a 72-68 loss to Serbia.
Nirra Fields led Canada with 19 points while Kia Nurse had 16. Sonja Vasic scored a team-high 16 points for Serbia and went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Serbia led 36-28 at the half after limiting Canada to 28 per cent shooting.
Canada’s defence stepped up to start the third quarter forcing eight turnovers and limiting Serbia to nine points.Shay Colley and Kia Nurse would score back-to-back three-pointers to cut Serbia’s lead to 38-35. Canada would tie the game in the third after outscoring Serbia 17-9.
Colley would leave the game in the third quarter after appearing to injure her right shoulder on a collision with Serbia’s Yvonne Anderson.
Canada will now play Korea in a must-win game on July 29 before finishing group play against Spain on Aug.1. The top two teams in the group will move on to the quarterfinals.
