NRL news, 2021: Newcastle Knights’ stand-off with Connor Watson baffles Andrew Johns

Rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns is baffled at the stand-off taking place between the Knights and utility Connor Watson, saying he “cannot believe” Newcastle are yet to lock him up.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson confirmed this week that the Tricolours had begun talking to the out-of-contract Watson about a potential return to the club.

Watson has also taken it upon himself to discuss his future with other clubs, after parting ways with his agent.

After being dissatisfied with the Knights’ initial two-year offer, Newcastle presented Watson with an extra year – but he’s yet to accept it.

Johns is dumbfounded at the hand the Knights have played in the situation.

“I cannot believe this decision. I think this year Connor has been consistently one of the Knights’ best players. And the thing with Connor is he’s so versatile. You can play him in any position on the field, from fullback to front row,” Johns said on Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour.

“He’s playing at the moment in jersey 13, which is one of those middle forwards (and) which really suits his game. The versatility of Connor where he’s that insurance, where he can play anyway … Off the bench in jersey 14 he’s dynamic, but I think this year he’s really nailed his position in that No.13 position.”

Watson’s ability to cover a host of positions has been crucial to the Knights remaining in the hunt for a second finals berth in succession, despite the fact they’ve been hit hard on the injury front.

Fullback Kalyn Ponga, halfback Mitchell Pearce and centre Bradman Best headline the key troops Newcastle have been without for several weeks during this season. They also didn’t acquire five-eighth Jake Clifford from the Cowboys until after the first 12 rounds.

“Very popular player within the club, very popular with the fans, so I can’t believe the Knights haven’t signed (Watson) up,” Johns said.

“They’ve just got to get it done … He’s one of those players I wouldn’t let go.”
