Now the fun really begins in the men’s Olympic soccer tournament. The knockout round bracket is set and every region of the world is represented.
Brazil will look to make it two gold medals in a row when it begins the knockout rounds against Egypt. Should it survive that quarterfinal, Brazil would meet South Korea or Mexico in the semis.
The other side of the bracket sees pre-tournament favorite Spain, with several players from the senior squad that advanced to the Euro semifinals, emerge as a strong candidate for the gold-medal match after ousting Ivory Coast. In the semis it will face host Japan, which needed a penalty-kick shootout to get past New Zealand in the quarters.

Beginning with the quarterfinals, if matches end in a tie after the 90 minutes of regulation, there will be 30 minutes of extra time that are played (two 15-minute periods). And if the deadlock is not resolved in extra time, a penalty-kick shootout will be used to determine the winner. The last gold medal match in 2016 between Brazil and Germany went to penalty kicks.
