FIBA have announced 14 Australians will hold a referee licence for the period 2021-2023. Of the 14 named, nine are returning while five will hold a licence for the first time showing the depth in our referee ranks.
Black Licence holders James Boyer and Scott Beker have recently returned from Toyko where they officiated at the Olympics, the pinnacle for any referee.
We congratulate them on this achievement and their nomination for a further two years.Craig Copes, James Griguol, Guy Richards and Jack Taylor have been promoted to a Black Licence which will allow them to officiate any international game at a senior or junior level and Madi Crowley-Long has been elevated to a Green Licence.
Basketball Australia’s (BA) Women and Girls strategy identified the need to create pathways for women through officiating and this year, four of the five new licenced referees are women. Our new female FIBA referees are Jacquiline (Jacqui) Dover, Hayley Cole, Calia Hanks and Tayla Flint.
Reuben Woolcock, who is currently in Victoria but started his officiating in Tasmania, has also been awarded his first licence.
Matt Scriven BA CEO said “we are really proud to have such a such a strong representation of referees on the international stage. Our referees are such an important part of our sport and to see so many being recognised by FIBA shows that we have a strong pathway to the highest level. With more female referees coming through our programs than ever before is really exciting for our sport.”
First time FIBA referee licencee, Jacqui Dover is excited about the opportunities in front of her. Jacqui grew up on the Gold Coast and spent her days on the courts at Carrara as a player, but it wasn’t long before a career as a referee became her focus. As the first indigenous female to referee an NBL game she now has her eye firmly on the prize. “My goal is to work fulltime officiating for the NBA and to work the floor with the best athletes in the world. My other goal is to work at the Olympics.”
When asked what advice she would give young people considering a career as a referee Dover said “firstly, it’s a lot more enjoyable than it looks from the sidelines, the friendships and experiences officiating offers are beyond what I could have imagined. Secondly if you’re a good bench warming player like I was, as a referee you get 40 minutes of game time with the best view of the court!”
