When it comes to tendinopathy there tends to be a ‘just load it‘ approach! Elsewhere in rehab, we recognise the complexity of pain and the person we’re helping but somehow in tendon pain, this seems to have been forgotten.
This and quite prescriptive loading programmes from the research can lead to a recipe-based approach which sadly will fail many patients as it doesn’t address their needs.
A big part of the issue is that such an approach treats everyone the same and this may be why around 40% of patients have ongoing symptoms after a rehab programme. A new study (Hanlon et al. 2021) may be paving the way for this to change by identifying key subgroups in Achilles tendinopathy.
In our video below, we discuss these 3 subgroups and how you might modify your treatment approach to address their differing needs. This is one of the key papers of 2021, watch the video to find out how to implement their findings to improve your practice.
