Not many are tipping Barcelona to finish atop La Liga this season without Lionel Messi, but the Blaugrana sure looked the part in the opening weekend, beating Real Sociedad 4-2.
They may not be on Messi’s level, but there are plenty of star players at Barcelona and they showed it against a Real Sociedad side that finished fifth in the league last season.
Veteran Gerard Pique got the goalfest started, forward Martin Braithwaite scored twice and Sergi Roberto also added a goal in the home triumph.Ronald Koeman’s side will look to continue to prove the doubters wrong in a Saturday road match at Athletic Bilbao, which tied 0-0 at Elche in Matchday 1. Scoring proved an issue for Athletic Club last season and it looks like the trend may be set to continue in the new campaign.

The match against Athletic Club is the second in a stretch of four straight La Liga matches for Barcelona before the club opens its UEFA Champions League group stage with its first midweek match of the season in September. There will be a break at the start of September for FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
