The 2022 K2 Alchemist Snowboard Review

Board: K2 Alchemist

Size: 158

Camber Option: Directional Camber. Rocker in the nose and camber from outside the front foot through the tail.

Bindings: Rome Black Labels

Stance: 21.5 Wide 15 Negative 12 Goofy

Boots: K2 Thraxis Size 10

My Weight: 200lbs

Resort: Arapahoe Basin

Conditions: Sunny bluebird skies, warmer temps, hero snow, soft creamy groomers, slush, hot pow off the runs, and a lot of lumpy mashed potato and chunder snow.

Flex: First and foremost I think think this board has a reputation that it’s super stiff, it’s honestly not. It’s a freeride flex through and through and it is stiffer, but it’s not a death plank. Utilizing a full directional flex you have a softer nose that stiffens up progressively as it goes to the tail. The torsional flex is there but not overly abundant.

Stability: The nose due to having rocker is the softest and most unstable portion of this deck. You’ll notice that it gets a little flappy at speeds and in rutted out terrain but it doesn’t send shock waves back into the front foot. Underfoot through the tail is the most stable section of the board. It plows through chop, chunder, and ice with ease and never feels like you’re going to get bucked. There’s a level of dampening and liveliness to this board that works to its advantage.

Ollies/Pop: There’s a lot of power out of this camber and it lets you know it. So when you load it up you feel it wanting to rebound and as you get that sweet release from the pop you will boost. This board wants to get you in the air and no matter what it’s going to do it.

Butterability: Talk about a chore. The nose for having rocker and being softer takes so much work to butter it. You’re putting all your weight out into the nose and flexing the board to get it to lock in and even then it’s fighting you the whole time. The tail you basically have to sit on the damn thing and let all your weight fight the camber profile.

Carving: Here’s where this board shines. There’s a super fluid and fast edge to edge transmission. This board wants to get you on edge and then let you cut through everything in front of you. It initiates a turn outside the front foot but it steers under the front foot and from inside the rear foot when you’re really cranking a turn. Short quick carves or deep hard aggressive ones it does them all with ease. The power out of the tail of this board means you keep your speed exiting a turn.

Rider in Mind: Hard charging freeride resort ripper.

Personal Thoughts: This board is amazing for cutting through all types of terrain and just plowing through everything in its path. It’s fast and stable yet nimble when you need to turn on a dime. The power out of the camber and off the tail is immense and it makes you want to set yourself up for more drive and deeper carves.

Comparable Boards: Jones Aviator, Amplid Surfari, Niche Maelstrom

Recommended Bindings: K2 Formula, Union Atlas, Bent Metal Cor-Pro
