The Broncos’ quarterback competition rages on
Broncos quarterback Drew Lock completed 5 of 7 passes for 151 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions against the Vikings. Both Lock and Teddy Bridgewater played well in their preseason debuts. Bridgewater will start against the Seahawks in Week 2. The starting quarterback for Denver is fantasy-relevant, considering the plethora of offensive weapons on the roster.
The battle between Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston continues in New Orleans
Hill completed 8 of 12 passes for 81 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception against the Ravens. On the other hand, Winston completed 7 of 12 passes for 96 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. This is a competition that will continue until shortly before the start of the regular season.
In his four starts last season, Hill averaged nearly 25 fantasy points per game. Additionally, Winston has finished as a QB1 in 42% of his 72 active career games. Whoever starts for the Saints will immediately land on the QB2 radar with upside.
Justin Fields delivered on the hype
Justin Fields completed 14 of 20 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown against the Dolphins. He also rushed for 33 yards and another score. He was a statistical dynamo in just 22 games as Ohio State’s starting signal-caller.
The former Buckeye accounted for 5,373 passing yards and 867 rushing yards. Fields threw 63 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions during that time frame. His dual-threat ability is highly coveted in fantasy football. He’d be on the QB1 radar if named the Bears’ starter heading into Week 1.
Trevor Lawrence’s debut left much to be desired
The No. 1 overall pick only completed 6 of 9 passes for 71 yards against the Browns. Trevor Lawrence didn’t throw any touchdowns or interceptions. However, he did get sacked and recovered his own fumble on the Jaguars’ opening play.
Other notable observations and sleepers
Tommy Garrett and I also discussed the debuts of QB Trey Lance, RB Rhamondre Stevenson, and WRs Terrace Marshall Jr. and Rondale Moore. Moreover, there was a discussion around running back and wide receiver sleepers.
Ravens running back Gus Edwards is an inexpensive way to get exposure to the Baltimore backfield. Additionally, Darius Slayton is the forgotten receiver in New York. He’s had back-to-back seasons of 740+ receiving yards.
Bringing it all together
This is a taste of what Tommy and I discussed in the latest episode of In The Mood for Fantasy Football, a Pro Football Network show that keeps you up to date on the current NFL news and how to adjust your lineups on a weekly basis with start/sit, waiver wire, and draft advice.
