Ways Hunting Benefits Society and the Environment

Once upon a time, hunting, trapping, and fishing wasn’t just an enjoyable pastime, it used to be a necessity for survival. Advances in technology and farming have made growing food on a large scale a more sustainable venture, removing much of the positive human interaction that once dominated our environment.

But with approximately 11.5 million hunters today, the practice of responsible harvesting of wild game is still alive and well in America. Unfortunately, many people are far removed from the proces-, and incorrectly assume hunters are anti-environmental, and a threat to natural resources. Luckily, nothing could be further from the truth, and hunters today are taking a stand that illustrates the efforts they take to help preserve the environment.

Hunting Supports Natural, Undamaged Habitats

Hunters go where wild game is comfortable, and wild game isn’t comfortable if their habitat is not conducive to the basic necessities they need for survival. This includes feed, shelter, and basic predatory protection. No matter what is being hunted, deer, duck, or bear- a hunter wants to disturb this environment as little as possible to help draw game back into the area for future hunts.

Hunters also help eradicate destructive wild game populations. For example, the introduction of various wild hog species that are not native to an area can wreak havoc and destroy the habitat of native species. They also can be dangerous to animals and human populations. Hunters choose firearms to help humanely control various species populations. For example, the 300 Blackout Rifle has become a powerful, dependable choice for hog hunting throughout the Southern states.

Hunting Contributes to Healthy Wildlife Populations

The overpopulation of various species can be harsh on the environment, and legal hunting practices help keep these habitats sustainable for healthy herd and animal growth. Rather than face starvation or low natality counts, hunting helps balance the ecosystem and more naturally balances the predator and prey populations. Restrictions on certain species can help focus various population growth as well by redirecting hunting efforts towards other species via licensing that is specific to certain areas at specific times of the year.

When there are more of a species that can be supported by the environment, this also weakens the surviving population, making them more susceptible to disease. Hunting helps keep the spread of various pathogens from running rampant through a herd, and since some diseases can be transmitted to humans from animals, this helps control that vector as well.

Hunters also report on what they see to local wildlife agencies, and bring in animals that are obviously sick or diseases for further testing so problems can be nipped in the bud before they spread. This is incredibly important in areas in farming and ranching communities to avoid negative impacts on domestic food sources as well.

Hunting Provides a Natural, Organic Source of Nutrition

Most hunters eat what they kill, or donate extra meat to various charities. Not only can this be helpful in a community, but it offers an organic, healthy protein source for a nutritious diet. This helps to reduce the overall carbon footprint and excludes the steps required for modern day meat-packing. Nothing against farming and ranching communities, but hunting definitely cuts out the middleman, and provides a more affordable source of food. In fact, most farmers and ranchers are avid hunters themselves, and store more than one type of firearm to ready themselves for the various hunting seasons.

Hunting Stimulates the Economy

Hunting is big business, and much of the equipment doesn’t come cheap. Firearms, clothing, accessories, vehicles- such as campers and trucks, and various supplies all contribute to the economies in which they are bought. This includes both small businesses as well as larger retailers that employ thousands of employees- supporting job creation. Local economies are further supported when hunters travel. Lodging, food, and gas are all brought in the communities hunters travel through and to.

Hunting Funds Conservation Efforts

Taxes from hunting licenses are not only an economical benefit, but help fund both state and federal efforts for land conservation. Maintaining parks and monuments, wildlife refuges, and environmental impact research are only a few things that directly benefit from hunting efforts. This supports not only the game they are hunting, but also nongame species and the habitats they live in.

In a world concerned with human and natural resource impacts, these types of efforts feed conservation efforts to ensure there are sustainable lands for everyone to enjoy for generations to come. It also helps feed into educational programs surrounding good land stewardship, responsibility, and works to instill generational responsibilities towards conservational efforts and the balance between land access use for grazing, hunting, and fishing. Too often use is restricted due to poor interpretation of a good balance between those who use the land and those who feel land should be left to nature. This often results in destructive forces, like we have witnessed with the overwhelming fire seasons that have occurred due to past fire suppression and restrictions of logging benefits. Educational programs funded by hunting and fishing can help bring a better understanding to future generations

Get Involved!

Just by being a hunter, you are helping to contribute both to your environmental conservation as well as society. Your efforts and consideration towards animal habitats, responsible legal hunting license, and taxes paid work to help keep the wildlife you love healthy, and the great outdoors great.

You can further contribute by helping with local environmental educational efforts and hunter safety courses to help support future generations of hunters.
