Today, we present a fan piece by Erin Manning on the development path of former Montreal Canadiens centre Jesperi Kotkaniemi. \x3c/em>\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>\x3cem>If you would like to share your fan experiences or have an opinion to contribute, contact us.\x3c/em>\x3c/p>\n\x3cp style=\"text-align: center;\">===\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>ROCKET SPORTS MEDIA — On November 1, 2018, a rookie playing center for the Montreal Canadiens scored his first NHL goal. In that moment of triumph we saw two factors that would help lead that young player, \x3cstrong>Jesperi Kotkaniemi\x3c/strong>, to sign an offer sheet with the Carolina Hurricanes less than three years later.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>The first factor was the skill involved in the play and the goal. Kotkaniemi helped recover the puck in the Habs’ own zone, raced up the ice beside his Finnish teammates \x3cstrong>Joel Armia\x3c/strong> and \x3cstrong>Artturi Lehkonen\x3c/strong>, and sent a quick shot short-side and high past the glove of the Washington Capitals’ \x3cstrong>Braden Holtby\x3c/strong>. It was a nice first period goal for the rookie’s first of his career.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>When Kotkaniemi turned to the crowd, the other factor appeared: a radiant smile on the face of a young man who was still, no matter what role he was playing with the Montreal Canadiens, little more than a boy—a boy who did not belong full-time in the NHL.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>The smile was back in the third period, when Kotkaniemi scored his second goal of the game (and his pro career) to spark the Canadiens comeback against the Capitals.\x3c/p>\n\x3ch4>Desperate for a Center\x3c/h4>\n\x3cp>Nobody thought he would be there already. Drafted at third overall, he was supposed to be a long-term project; everyone knew that. Kotkaniemi was supposed to go home to Finland and grow up before entering the hardest hockey league in the world.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>It was his talent, his work ethic, and his competitive spirit that changed things at the Habs’ training camp. But the Habs were still in charge of this enthusiastic boy, and they needed to be the adults in the room who acknowledged that in spite of appearances to the contrary he wasn’t ready. They didn’t.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>His introduction to the NHL happened before I became a hockey fan and started watching the Habs. My first year as a Habs fan was Kotkaniemi’s second year in the NHL, the year things began to unravel for him. As new hockey fans in Texas, you might think my husband and I would follow the Dallas Stars, our local team. But my husband was interested in the Montreal Canadiens because of a different young player, the rookie \x3cstrong>Nick Suzuki\x3c/strong> who was attracting lots of attention.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>I noticed Kotkaniemi when my husband and I were watching games and trying to figure out mysteries like “offsides” and “icings” along with the rest of the game. I was confused—were there two rookies with the Habs? When I learned that Kotkaniemi was in his second year at the age of 19, I was surprised, and wondered if this was normal for hockey players.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>I know now that it isn’t, and that it wasn’t good for Kotkaniemi, either.\x3c/p>\n\x3ch4>A Development Detour\x3c/h4>\n\x3cp>His injury-plagued sophomore year showed the error of the notion that Kotkaniemi had been ready for the big league at 18. Before the end of that season Kotkaniemi would go to the AHL, a departure some fans saw as ominous. The whispers that he was a bust began to rise as memories of his rookie year faded.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>Kotkaniemi had a different view. In every interview he gave during that time, he expressed something other than disappointment: he was grateful for the opportunity to play at a lower level, to try to learn the North American game properly at a slightly slower pace, to have a coach who didn’t get angry when Kotkaniemi asked for explanations.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>He was grateful for this tiny chance at development.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>It didn’t last long. Kotkaniemi was injured after putting up 13 points in 13 AHL games. The injury was serious enough to end his season. Had it not been for a cascade of unusual events including the playoff bubble, \x3cstrong>Max Domi\x3c/strong>’s type-1 diabetes that delayed his postseason arrival, the play-in round where Kotkaniemi revealed his playoff beast mode to an astonished fan base (and equally astonished team), it’s possible that Kotkaniemi’s time in Montreal might have ended sooner than it did.\x3c/p>\n\x3ch4>A Change in the Plan\x3c/h4>\n\x3cp>\x3cstrong>Marc Bergevin\x3c/strong> was so overjoyed by the 2020 playoff performances of Nick Suzuki and Jesperi Kotkaniemi that he made bold moves in the offseason that followed, and declared both to be untouchable keys to the Habs’ future. A year later the locks have been changed as far as Kotkaniemi is concerned, in spite of a Stanley Cup run in which Kotkaniemi had an impact. What happened?\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>At the beginning of his third NHL season Kotkaniemi said he hoped he’d have his best year. It started that way; the youngest center on the team put up seven points in his first 13 games while centering a line that included \x3cstrong>Tyler Toffoli\x3c/strong> with either \x3cstrong>Joel Armia\x3c/strong> or \x3cstrong>Corey Perry\x3c/strong> on the other side.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>By the 14th game of the season, Canadiens head coach \x3cstrong>Claude Julien\x3c/strong> was in trouble. The team’s hot start faded. \x3cstrong>Phillip Danault\x3c/strong>’s line scored at a lower rate than both Suzuki’s and Kotkaniemi’s lines. To spark Danault’s line, Julien took Tyler Toffoli from Kotkaniemi’s line and gave Kotkaniemi winger \x3cstrong>Tomas Tatar\x3c/strong>, who was in a scoring slump. That started the carousel of ever-shifting lines and strange deployment that would eventually ruin Kotkaniemi’s productivity.\x3c/p>\n\x3ch4>Instability Yields Inconsistency\x3c/h4>\n\x3cp>By the end of the regular season, Kotkaniemi would have 18 unique starting lines and would start 26 games with a different starting line than the one he’d had in the game or games just before. In an 82-game season, that would be like having 26 trios and starting 38 games with a different line than the one from the previous game.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>Despite the carousel of wingers, Kotkaniemi was producing at about a 0.5 point-per-game rate for the first 34 games of the season. His first nine trios were spread over those 34 games. Kotkaniemi had nine more trios in the last 22 games, following the arrival of \x3cstrong>Eric Staal\x3c/strong> to take a slot at center on the team. In those games Kotkaniemi played on Danault’s wing six times, when he hadn’t played on the wing for two years. The Habs were playing four games a week by then and had little time to practice.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>Kotkaniemi played all 56 regular season games, but was told he would be scratched to begin the playoffs.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>In an interview, coach \x3cstrong>Dominique Ducharme\x3c/strong> compared Kotkaniemi to a crooked nail they hadn’t had time to straighten out and had been forced to keep hammering—a metaphor that perhaps revealed more than Ducharme intended. The rigors of the season with Kotkaniemi’s unusual deployment had revealed some of the missing pieces of the young center’s development, and his coach saw him as a player who was inconsistent.\x3c/p>\n\x3ch4>Writing on the Wall\x3c/h4>\n\x3cp>Though Kotkaniemi entered the playoffs in the second game against Toronto, scored the game-winning overtime goal in the sixth game of that series, and went on to have a positive impact in the playoffs, he was scratched again in the last two games of the Stanley Cup Final. Players with limiting injuries were preferred to him in the lineup; that likely told Kotkaniemi everything he needed to know about his future in Montreal.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>If it didn’t, Marc Bergevin’s inability to say anything positive about the likelihood that Kotkaniemi would play as second line center this fall surely clued Kotkaniemi—and his agent—in. (Photo by Francois Lacasse/NHLI via Getty Images)\x3c/figcaption>\x3c/figure>\x3cp>It’s easy to go back to the November 2018 game in his rookie season and see the paradox of a skilled goal followed by a boy’s grin after a comment like that. Kotkaniemi’s talent made the Habs skip over development steps because they needed him to play. The resulting inconsistency in Kotkaniemi’s play that grew over time ended up hurting him and them.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>With no reason to believe the situation would ever change in Montreal, Jesperi Kotkaniemi signed an offer sheet with a team that already has a development plan in place for him, along with a coach who is skilled with young players. Here are your Habs Headlines!\x3c/p>\n\x3ch3>Mailloux Suspended\x3c/h3>\n\x3cp>In an unprecedented move, Ontario Hockey League Commissioner David Branch announced that Montreal Canadiens prospect \x3cstrong>Logan Mailloux\x3c/strong> has been suspended from the OHL indefinitely. Branch directed the London Knights to remove Mailloux from the active roster for at least the first three months to begin the season. Mailloux will be eligible to apply for reinstatement as of January 1, 2022.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>Mailloux was suspended for violating “the League’s expectation of the appropriate conduct of an OHL player.” While on loan to SK Lejon, a third tier league in Sweden in November 2020, the then 17-year-old was charged with defamation and offensive photography. The matter was resolved with respect to the Swedish justice system in December 2020 after Mailloux paid a fine to the victim.\x3c/p>\n\x3ch4>Training Camp\x3c/h4>\n\x3cp>Mailloux had been taking part in the Knights training camp from Monday to Wednesday this week. “He’s just dominating,” commented a scout attending the intra-squad scrimmages  about Mailloux’s play adding, “he’s the best player on the ice.”\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>The Canadiens had previously announced that their first round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft would not be invited to Montreal’s rookie camp or training camp.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>London’s rookie defenceman will miss at least the first 29 regular-season games of the schedule. By the terms of the OHL ruling, Mailloux will be allowed to continue training with the Knights. The WHL and QMJHL will honor the suspension and will not allow Mailloux to play.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>When reviewing Mailloux’s application for reinstatement, the OHL will consider “his conduct since his return to Canada and the appropriate treatment, counselling, mentoring and or education he receives from the date of this decision.”\x3c/p>\n\x3ch3>Red vs White\x3c/h3>\n\x3cp>The Montreal Canadiens announced that their annual Red vs White intrasquad scrimmage will take place on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at 3:00 pm. at the Bell Centre. Tickets are now available on a first-come, first-served basis for $10 each.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>In accordance with Quebec government regulations, attendance will be limited to 7,500 fans to permit social distancing. Each fan will be required to provide a government-issued vaccine passport upon entry to the event.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>It’s being reported that the 7,500 limit on fans will also apply to Canadiens regular-season home games for now. Fully vaccinated players who contract a breakthrough case of COVID-19 will be categorized as a hockey-related injury.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>NHL and NHLPA define fully vaccinated as two weeks having passed since the final dose of an FDA or Health Canada approved vaccine. This may be a moving target as it appears that in the US fully vaccinated will soon be defined as three doses of an approved vaccine.\x3c/p>\n\x3cblockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n\x3cp lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Story coming shortly, but the NHL’s COVID protocols for 2021-22 were sent out today. Here are your Habs Headlines!\x3c/p>\n\x3ch3>A Careful Choice\x3c/h3>\n\x3cp>Late afternoon on Saturday, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that they had tendered an offer sheet to Canadiens centre \x3cstrong>Jesperi Kotkaniemi\x3c/strong>. Following the stunning news, the Canes poked the bear with a myriad of well-played jabs in the direction of \x3cstrong>Marc Bergevin\x3c/strong> and the Montreal Canadiens. And then everything went quiet, publicly, as the clock ticked down on the 7-day timer for the Canadiens to make their decision.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>But behind the scenes, we are confident that GM Bergevin is huddled with his advisors pouring over his options. Will Bergevin match the Hurricanes one-year $6.1 million offer or will he allow his first pick of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, third overall, leave the organization for a considerably less valuable first round pick in 2022 accompanied by a third round pick?\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>Overwhelmingly, Habs fans are content to let Kotkaniemi go to Carolina. Some are downright thrilled but that no doubt can be attributed to the negatively-slanted reporting on KK by the Montreal media (initiated to protect \x3cstrong>Phillip Danault\x3c/strong>.) Or perhaps many simply don’t understand the process or ‘the plan.’\x3c/p>\n\x3ch4>Addressing the Void Down the Middle\x3c/h4>\n\x3cp>To get a sense of Bergevin’s plan, we have to return to the 2017 playoffs, where the Atlantic Division champions, the Canadiens, were ousted by an Eastern Conference wild card team, the New York Rangers in six games. Throughout the series Montreal struggled mightily to generate offence. The Habs centres, Danault, \x3cstrong>Tomas Plekanec, Brian Flynn\x3c/strong>, and \x3cstrong>Steve Ott\x3c/strong> combined for just one goal in the series.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>Just weeks after the bitter playoff loss, Marc Bergevin acquired \x3cstrong>Jonathan Drouin\x3c/strong> with the intention of making him the team’s number one centre. As we know, that experiment was a complete failure. Exactly one year later Drouin tried again to trade for a centre acquiring \x3cstrong>Max Domi\x3c/strong>. That too, would be a failed attempt.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>But one week after the Domi trade, Bergevin made the first positive step to solidifying the centre position by drafting Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Less than three months later, the general manager acquired a second centre when he traded \x3cstrong>Max Pacioretty\x3c/strong> for \x3cstrong>Nick Suzuki\x3c/strong>.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>We have heard the Canadiens brass speak in glowing terms about the belief that Suzuki and Kotkaniemi could excel at being Montreal’s ‘1-2 punch’ down the middle for a decade or more. But management’s decision-making on Kotkaniemi put that plan in peril.\x3c/p>\n\x3ch4>Multiple mistakes\x3c/h4>\n\x3cp>There’s little debate that the Canadiens rushed Kotkaniemi into the NHL when he should have returned to Finland for one more year. Then a combination of Claude Julien and Dominique Ducharme took turns undercutting the young player’s confidence. And neither head coach put Kotkaniemi in a position to succeed with a dizzying array of linemates and no defined role.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>While Kotkaniemi, known for a competitive personality, has excelled in the Canadiens last two playoff appearances (second in goals in 2021), his numbers have been below expectations during the regular season affected by poor coaching. This allowed Bergevin to low-ball his camp during negotiations for a contract extension. It has been reported that the Canadiens offered between $2.2 and $2.5 million each year of a two-year contract.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>So, with the Hurricanes offering $6.1 million on a one-year contract, it was an easy decision for Kotkaniemi. It was a well-structured offer by the Canes, who want the player, and have put the Canadiens in a difficult position. It is a far more intelligent play than the inept, P.R. stunt to offer sheet \x3cstrong>Sebastian Aho\x3c/strong> pulled by Bergevin and the Canadiens in July of 2019.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>And Bergevin has no one to blame but himself for opening the door to a hostile offer dragging out the contract negotiations until just weeks before the start of training camp.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>But the culpability goes beyond this off-season.\x3c/p>\n\x3ch4>Thinking Long-term\x3c/h4>\n\x3cp>In the past 40 years, the Canadiens have had just two top-three picks in the Entry Draft. Both have occurred on Bergevin’s watch: Kotkaniemi and \x3cstrong>Alex Galchenyuk\x3c/strong>. In each case mistakes were made in development and transition to the NHL. And it appears that both will exit the organization within short order.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>That could be a legacy of major failure for Marc Bergevin.\x3c/p>\n\x3cp>Given that a pick like Kotkaniemi comes around so rarely in the organization, Bergevin must carefully consider the long-term aspects of the decision he is about to make. If the general manager lets Kotkaniemi walk, it is highly unlikely that he can acquire a player with the same ceiling for the compensation he receives from Carolina.
